Résumé : | The Compendium of Corn Diseases, published in 1973, was the first compendium published by The American Phytopathological Society. A revised edition was published in 1980. Both editions were edited by Malcolm C. Shurtleff, Department of Plant Pathology, University of Illinois, Urbana. The NCR-25 Committee on Corn and Sorghum Diseases, which is composed of plant pathologists from universities and the private sector, has been given the responsibility of revising the second edition. We dedicate this third edition to Malcom Shurtleff in recognition of his contribution to the first two editions of this compendium and to the entire compendium series published by The American Phytopathological Society. As with the first two editions, the third edition has been written to serve as a practical reference for both plant pathologists and general audiences. It is intended to be useful for the education of crop scouts, agrobusiness representatives, county agents, area crop specialists, educators, students, growers, and researchers. The literature citations are a starting point for individuals who wish to learn more about specific corn diseases. In developing this third edition, special attention was given to updating symptoms, pathogen descriptions, and literature citations and to including diseases that were not important prior to 1980. Like the first two editions, it is international in scope; however, this edition focuses on diseases that are or can be of importance in the United States. Each section of the compendium has been revised and up- dated by a plant pathologist. Names of the persons who prepared the sections appear at the end of the sections. A list of contributors, including section authors, is included. The compendium is divided into two sections: infectious diseases and noninfectious or abiotic diseases. The infectious diseases are organized by causal agent (prokaryotes, fungi, nematodes, and viruses) and by the part of the plant that is diseased (e.g., leaf, stem, roots, and ear). Most sections on individual diseases include a description of the symptoms, causal organism, epidemiology and disease cycle, and control. The symptom described is the most common seen on corn hybrids currently grown in the United States. It is important to understand that a radical change in corn hybrids could dras-tically change the symptoms of a disease. In the section on the causal organism, the most current name is used followed by a brief description and, in many cases, helpful hints for identification. The section on epidemiology and disease cycle provides background on conditions in areas where the disease is most important, where and how the causal agent survives between crops, and how it is disseminated. The section on control is distinctly different from previous editions. With many diseases, inbreds that are very susceptible or resistant are identified by name and the genetics of resistance, when known, is discussed. Selected references have been chosen to update each section. Other revisions of this compendium are planned to keep information up to date and improve the format, the amount and level of detail, quality of illustrations, and other items as needed. Comments regarding the general usefulness of this edition and suggestions for improvement are always welcome. |
