Résumé : | The first edition of the Compendium of Wheat Diseases, published by the American Phytopathological Society in 1977, proved to be a popular and useful document. Currently, 18,000 copies are in circulation among scientists, students, wheat producers, and wheat industry personnel. Like the first edition, this second edition is a thorough and authoritative treatment of wheat diseases and is international in scope. It has been written to serve as a practical reference for both plant pathologists and general audiences. It is amply illustrated, uses descriptive terminology, and includes a glossary, index, and selected references. In developing this second edition, special attention was given to updating symptom and pathogen descriptions, to adding post-1976 literature citations, to bringing disease and pathogen nomenclature up to date, and to improving and supplementing the more than 160 photographs included in the first edition. Any abnormality of the wheat plant or its seed is considered herein to be a disease. Damage caused by insects, however, is discussed only as it relates to, resembles, or confounds other disease diagnoses. The first and largest section of the Compendium describes over 100 infectious diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, nematodes, viruses and viruslike organisms, and witchweeds. The numerous diseases caused by fungi are subdivided according to the part of the plant on which the abnormality usually occurs. Physiological (nonparasitic) disorders caused by environmental factors are discussed in the second section on noninfectious diseases. Frequent cross-references in the text point out similarities and contrasts between diseases, symptoms, and host-parasite interactions. Symptoms, pathogens, and disease cycles are given special attention and, as much as possible, the history, distribution, and economic importance of each disease are included. Control measures are presented as principles because specific controls for individual diseases often vary greatly with time and location. Detailed information about currently recommended controls should be obtained from competent area specialists. Like the first edition, this second edition of the Compendium of Wheat Diseases has benefited from the input of numerous scientists. Each entry in the first edition was sent to one or more experts for technical updating. Comments from these initial reviews were incorporated, and the revised text was returned to the same and to additional scientists for final approval. In all, over 70 scientists contributed to the second edition. Approximately one-fourth of the photographs in the first edition have been replaced or supplemented with improved illustrations. This second edition contains six new disease entries and significantly more illustrations of disease symptoms, pathogens, and disease cycles. APS Press, the publishing arm of the American Phytopathological Society, approved the development of this second edition of the Compendium of Wheat Diseases in 1985. |
