ARBRE TRANSFORMATION DU BOIS ARBRE FORESTIER MALADIE BOTANIQUE |
Résumé : | The willow is as old as any of the earliest recorded plants. It is definitely pre-Ice Age in origin and has practically n worldwide distribution. In its wild state it is among the first vegetation to appear on ground laid bare by excavation, forest fires and earthquakes. Tenacious and prolific, it has adapted to climates and soils as diverse as the Soviet arctic and the river systems of New South Wales in Australia. The osier willow varieties have been cultivated for centuries by basketmakers; another variety is grown in England to make cricket bats; and there are a whole range of very attractive ornamental garden varieties. In this fascinating study, Mr WarrenWren discusses the evidence of its origin, its distribution and varied habitat. He then describes the three main types, their flowers and seeds. Garden and commercial types are comprehensively reviewed, and cultivation, propagation, pests and diseases, and botanical features are among other topics treated. A glossary, bibliography and forty photographs and drawings add to the value of a book that is set fair to become the standard work on the subject. |
