Résumé : | The late Harold N. Fisk achieved wide recognition during the 1950's and 1960's as the leading authority on the geology of the lower Mississippi River and its delta. While Professor of Geology at Louisiana State University he also acted as a consultant to the Mississippi River Commission and prepared several detailed reports including: “Geological Investigation of the Alluvial Valley of the Lower Mississippi River” (1944), one of the classics of geological literature. His studies included detailed evaluations of the sediments which filled the entrenched Mississippi River valley during postglacial time. Literally tens of thousands of borings had been made for various engineering purposes, and these data were incorporated in Fisk's studies of the valley-fill sedimentation which took place as sea level rose following the late Wisconsinan glacial episode. A logical extension of these studies into the prograding Mississippi delta plain was more difficult because of a deficiency in available data. |
