Résumé : | This book is about rising to meet the great challenges of our day. We find ourselves in a climate crisis of great magnitude. Mankind is literally changing the balance between ourselves and the atmosphere, leading to an unprecedented warming of the earth. Despite the wonderful technological advances of the twentieth century, we still generate power and fuel our vehicles with coal, ou, and gas-and the combustion of those fuels is what is heating up the planet. Meanwhile, more than a billion people find themselves still trapped in dire poverty, hoping for just a percentage of the wealth that we have here in the United States. Millions of chiidren still die from preventable diseases and malnutrition, and throughout much of the world, violence, corruption, terrorism, and oppression are still all too frequently the realities of daily life. Each one of these problems is serious. Together, they add up to signs that this is a turning point in human civilization, one that requires great moral leadership and generational responsibility. We have a great challenge. However, because we understand the root causes of these problems, we can also join together to solve them. We need a new vision of the future. The Bible says, Where there is no vision, the people perish. Today, facing so many problems, many of us find it very difficuit to envision a better future, much less the kind of solutions that might make such a future possible. That's why this book is 50 vitally important. Worldchanging: A User's Guide [or the 2lst Century is a compendium of solutions, some little known but well proven, some innovative and new, some bold but as yet untried. This book flot only shows what is already possible, but also helps all of us imagine what might be-in our own homes, in our communities, and for the planet as a whole. Taken together, these solutions present a picture of a future that is not dark or catastrophic, but one that is full of hope and within our grasp. To build that future, we need a generation of everyday heroes, people who-whatever their walks of life-have the courage to think in fresh ways and to act to meet this planetary crisis head-on. This book belongs in the library of every person who aspires to be part of that generation. |
