RESSOURCE VEGETALE CONSERVATION CONSERVATION DES RESSOURCES |
Résumé : | It is distressing to realise that during the last millennium the human race has caused the exponential loss of plant genetic diversity throughout the world; this has had direct and negative economic, political and social consequences. At the same time we have failed to fully exploit the positive benefits that might resuft from conservation and use of the world's plant genetic resources. The signing of the Biodiversity Convention at the 'Earth Summit' in 1992, drew attention to the need to conserve and equitably utilise biological diversity for the benefit of all humankind. The Convention placed emphasis on the need for a complementary approach to conservation, employing both exsitu and in situ techniques,Our last book, 'Plant Genetic Conservation - the In situ Approach' focused explicitly on in situ plant conservation techniques; thus we feft there was now a need for a sister volume that addresses the 'Ex situ Conservation of Plant Genetic Resources'. This book provides a practical and theoretical overview of the exsitutechniques used to conserve plant genetic resources. The thirteen chapters review: germplasm collection, seed storage, field gene banks, botanic gardens, and in vitro and pollen storage as well as emphasising the role of local communities in conservation activities. The efficient management and use of collections is surveyed. A series of case studies illustrates the practical conservation of diverse plant groups, and the book concludes with a review of future ex situ conservation priorities, highlighting some of the most important and contentious issues of today and tomorrow. |
