Résumé : | This compendium of disorders of beet. Beta vulgaris L., was compiled to provide a readily accessible and easy-to-use reference for field workers, diagnosticians, extension specialists, plant pathologists, entomologists, and specialty gardeners. It was produced for those with limited training in plant pathology, entomology, nematology, and nutritional problems of beet. Although its emphasis is on sugar beet, the compendium describes diseases and pests of the other three most important cultural types of B. vulgarisfodder beet, table beet, and Swiss chard. Biotic diseases and disorders are described in Part I, arranged according to causal agents (fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes), plant parts affected (foliage and roots), and the stage of growth affected (seedling, adult plant, and stored beet). Part II, on insect and arthropod pests, gives information on life history, physical description, damage caused, and control measures, for each major pest. Nutritional disorders, herbicide damage, and other abiotic disorders are described in Part III. Disease keys are also included, for identification of the major diseases and disorders of beet. In diagnosing a disease, one should use the keys to tentatively identify the disease and then consult the description given in the text. Each section was written by an active researcher or researchers in the discipline concerned with the diseases or disorders discussed in that section. Part II was written by an entomologist: the other sections were written by plant pathologists and physiologists.
