Résumé : | Over 20 years ago, participants in the Ornamentals Workshop at Crossnore, North Carolina, worked together under the editorship of Ronald K. Jones (North Carolina State University, Raleigh) and Robert C. Lambe (Virginia Tech, Blacksburg) to write an extension publication entitled Diseases of Woody Ornamental Plants and Their Control in Nurseries. The Ornamentals Workshop has continued on a biennial basis and has evolved into the national working group for ornamental diseases. Under the present editorship, the group planned this volume. Diseases of Woody Ornamentals and Trees in Nurseries. The content has expanded to include ornamental crops grown in nurseries throughout the United States, Diseases on over 65 crops grown in nurseries, including shrubs, ground covers, subtropical ornamentals, and shade trees, are described, along with methods for their control. A feature of many chapters on individual crops is information on cultivar resistance to diseases. This information has been scattered in a wide variety of sources, many of which are not readily available to nurserymen and those interested in disease control until now. Uniquely, for each disease, a summary gives the nurseryman a quick reference to timely control measures. These measures, part of an integrated disease management approach, are explained in detail in the text. Since not all diseases occur on a given crop across the United States, the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map (facing page 68) is used as a reference for geographical production zones in which the nurserymen might expect diseases to occur. In addition, the contributors have developed a list of the occurrence of diseases in each state, presented in the appendix. Color plates illustrate many of the diseases discussed, A glossary of plant pathological terms is provided. In addition to the latest information on diseases of specific ornamental crops, the book also introduces the reader to the general nature of plant diseases through chapters on abiotic causes of diseases (nonliving disease agents) and biotic pathogens. The chapter on abiotic diseases includes an extensive list of herbicidesthat may cause injury in ornamental crops if misused, or if orna- mentals are planted in former agricultural soils containing these materials. Chapters on management strategies give nurserymen and other readers an in-depth guide to integrated disease management, including cultural control, sanitation, resistance, fungicides, and bactericides, and chapters on control of various pathogen groups are also included. In addition, information is included on the role of recycled water in disease development and ways to manage pathogens in recycled irrigation water. The latest horticultural practices are discussed in relation to plant diseases. Tissue culture techniques to eliminate pathogens from propagation stock are described, as are the role of plant diagnostic clinics in assisting the nurseryman in disease diagnosis. This book would not have been possible without the cooperation and dedication of a number of people. The editors would like to thank all the contributors who took time to help plan the initial outline and then volunteer to write their chapters. Without their contributions, this book would not have been possible. The editors thank former APS Press editor-in-chief Kurt Leonard for his en- couragement of the project. The editors are grateful to APS Press senior editor Robert G. Linderman for his time to edit the manuscript and to offer valuable suggestions for improvement. Finally, we express our most deeply felt thanks to Lori Force, Department of Plant Pathology, North Carolina State University, for typing the manuscript throughout the many revisions, and we sincerely appreciate Kina Jordan for typing the final version. |
