MAGMA VOLCAN LAVE ERUPTION ROCHE VOLCANISME TECTONIQUE |
Résumé : | This major text is the first to bridge the division between studies of modern and ancient volcanic rocks. A sedimentological approach has been adopted as the main theme of the book in order to facilitate understanding of the broad spectrum of volcanic facies types, the processes responsible for their formation, and their significance in terms of depositional setting. Thus, the treatment should appeal widelv to any geologist interested in volcanics, and not just to specialists in igneous petrology and geochemistry, and the book IS far more substantial and rigorous than the other volcanology texts, currently available. The book begins with a discussion of the facies concept and the physical properties of magmas. The products of volcanism - volcaniclastics and lavas - form the basis of the next two chapters. Pyroclastic deposits - the primary volcaniclastic products of explosive volcanism - are then treated in five chapters covering falls, flows, ignimbrites, surges and welded tuffs, and the whole spectrum of their facies types. Surface reworking, which gives rise to epiclastic types of volcaniclastic products, and the various ways by which crystal tuffs (both pyroclastic and epiclastic) may he formed are discussed next. By Chapter 12 the reader is well prepared for the classification of pyroclastic and volcaniclastic deposits. This leads logically to the last three chapters which discuss modern volcanoes and volcanic centres and their successions, facies models for ancient volcanic successions (including mineral deposits), and finally volcanism and tectonic setting. This comprehensive and authoritative book will he of interest not only to volcanologists and igneous petrologists, but to sedimentologists, stratigraphers and field geologists: and its economic relevance will capture the attention of those involved in mineral exploration. Ray Cas lectures in sedimentology at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia John Wright is a consultant, having worked at the University of California (Santa Barbara), Monash University, the University of Puerto Rico, and in exploration for British Petroleurn. Both authors have worked extensively in volcanic rocks and have combined their respective interests in ancient and recent successions in this innovative book. |
