| Résumé : | Plants have a huge impact upon human existence. All of our food and much of our other energy needs are ultimately derived from the products of plant photosynthesis. Plants also have their impact through the social and economic dimensions of human existence. All agriculture, which provides us with our food, is ultimately based on plant production, be it directly through arable crops such as cereals, horticultural crops including fruits and vegetables or indirectly through pasture, forage and plant derived animal feedstuffs. Industrial crops such as fiber crops or woodlands and forests are a vital source of renewable materials for clothing, building and recreation, that we take for granted in everyday life. Flowers and ornamental plants delight us with their beauty, fragrance and their seemingly infinite variety. Societies and economies all over the world have been able to gain increasing benefits from plants as our scientific understanding of their properties and potential has increased rapidly over recent decades. The range and complexity of this new information about plants is now potentially bewildering. A real challenge is how can such accumulated knowledge be made available to those taking an interest in the area for the first time. Equally how can a specialist in one aspect of plant applications gain access to information from wider or complementary areas of the subject? This is where we hope that this work will be of the most value. The Encyclopedia of Applied Plant Sciences provides a friendly and comprehensive portal to the huge amount of knowledge that is available on plants and how we make use of them. The Editors, assisted by a distinguished Editorial Board have commissioned articles from an unparalleled group of experts across the plant sciences to provide introductory overviews and summaries of the state-of-the-art for their areas. Each article is sufficient for the reader to gain an understanding of the essentials of the topic covered and also provides an entry to the substantial amount of literature that lies beneath the articles. Rigorous editing and comprehensive indexing by the publishers ensures that the articles are understandable and that information can be located as needed. Articles covering the breadth of plant science are grouped under clearly described entries that will help the reader in finding not only the article they require but also articles on closely related topics. Wherever possible authors have tried to show how the underlying science and information links through to applications in practical situations. Plant science undoubtedly has an exciting future and in this Encyclopedia we signpost this through a range of entries on the potential of the new genetic technologies, both in addressing traditional challenges and in making novel contributions to agriculture and other applications of plant science. Putting the encyclopedia together has been a long and involved project. We are grateful for the help and support from the staff at Elsevier, the expertise and time given by the editorial board and the huge amount of work by the authors of the articles. We believe that the end result is a unique assemblage of the key information in this important field and are privileged to have been involved in the project. The value in the work is down to the quality of the contributors. Omissions or lack of balance are entirely the responsibility of the Editors. We hope that the work proves to be not only of practical value but can act as a catalyst for readers to gain entry to the exciting world of plant science. |
