OCEAN
CONTINENT TECTONIQUE |
Résumé : | Until the late 1960's most scientists thought of the earth as a rigid body with fixed continents and permanent ocean basins. Now must scientists believe the earth's surface is brittle, in constant motion, and composed of large plates. These plates repeatdly collide, break apart, and collide again. The result of these movements are the new ocean basins, mountains, earthquakes, volcanoes, and other dramatic features and events. This scientific revolution is called global tectonics, more commonly known as continental drift, and it is the central topic of this book. The book also presents a philosophical view of scientific research and serves as an example of how scientific thougth evolves. |
