The first national symposium on the geological formations making up the Transylvanian Basin was organized by the Faculty of Biology, Geography, Geology - Geology Department, in May 1986, and dealt with the Eocene formations. The scientific meeting on the Oligocene formations held again at Cluj-Napoca on May 20-21, 1988, represents the natural sequel of the geological studies striving to bring up-to-date the information on the Oligocene from Transylvania and other parts of Romania, studies carried out by specialists from the University of Cluj-Napoca, and from Bucharest, Iassy, etc.
