Résumé : | The aim of this research was to determine if the soil succession studied by Laliberté et al. (2012), near the Western Australian Jurien Bay, can be considered as a chronoséquence despite the criticism published by Uren and Parson (2013). In order to do so 15 samples from 3 Jurian Bay dunes (Quindalup Young, Quindalup Old and Bassendean) and their geochemical composition have been studied. These sands were examined many times, but their origin remains vague and causes controversies among the authors. The geochemical analysis reveal a loss of some elements (MgO, Na2O, Cao) and an enrichment of some others (SiO2, TiO2) with an almost linear variation. The weathering index (Chemical Index of Alteration and Weathering Index of Parker) and the ACNK diagram (Nesbitt and Young, 1982) also follow the same trend. These results demonstrate a similar geochemical behavior from the parental material of each sand. However, the trace elements and rare earth elements (REE) analysis clearly shows clear differences between these origins. The results of our analysis and interpretations allow us to assert that this soil succession cannot be considered as a chronosequence sensu stricto. But the similar geochemical behavior of the different elements encourages us to study it as such. |
