Résumé : | The primary purpose of this compendium, like others in this series, is to serve as a sourcebook for growers of apples and pears and for pomologists; crop advisors from universities, agribusiness, and government; private consultants; students; and plant pathologists worldwide who work with the apple and pear industry. It is designed as a practical reference on the identification, cause, epidemiology, and control of diseases of apple and pear, including postharvest disease problems. This compendium was initiated by the Deciduous Tree Fruit Disease Workers. The group has sponsored numerous work-shops, field tours, and informal meetings, normally in association with the annual meeting of the American Phytopathological Society, to exchange information about diseases of apple and pear. In 1988, about 30 specialists attended a fruit tour and workshop in Hirosaki, Japan, sponsored by apple researchers in Japan and the Deciduous Tree Fruit Disease Workers, based in the United States, prior to the Fifth International Congress of Plant Pathology. Several chapters of the compendium were prepared by authors who participated in the workshop. Because much of what is known about fruit diseases in Japan is published in Japanese, making this information available for worldwide distribution in English is a contribution of this compendium. We hope that the contributions from Canada, England, Germany, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States, in addition to those from Japan, make this compendium the most thorough and authoritative treatment of apple and pear diseases yet assembled. The disease descriptions include information on the geographical distribution and relative importance of each disease. Symptoms are described and illustrated. Rather detailed descriptions of biotic causal agents are provided as a further aid to identification. Brief accounts of the disease cycle and epidemiology of the causal agents and their control are given. Principles of disease control are stressed, but, where appropriate, examples of chemical control options are provided. About five selected references are given for each disease to help readers locate more specific information. Several disorders caused by abiotic factors, such as nutrientdeficiencies and environmental stresses, are also described. We thank the scientists listed below, who prepared sections of the compendium. Those who reviewed portions of the manuscript as well are identified by an asterisk. Without their timely input, it would not have been possible to complete a final draft within one year from the initial requests for manuscripts. |
